I met up with Amber & Kathryn (of Sweetest Thing Weddings Event, Floral & Design) at Brown Goldsmiths.  The visit/tour was part of  Nolan and Laura’s prize package as the winning contestants of The 2011 Real Maine Wedding of the Year!  Nolan & Laura’s task =  choose 3 wedding bands they love…and then the online voting begins. (the public makes the final wedding ring selection for the couple!!)

I have my fingers crossed tight that the “make your own” wedding ring will win. There is a studio on the second floor with all sorts of tiny tools and big gadgets AND it is open to any couple
who wish to make their very own wedding rings in Maine…

…not just “design” but actually put on an apron and with your very own hands “make” a ring!!!

While we were looking around, Brown Goldsmiths‘ offered to clean our jewelry…I happily passed my ring over…and thank goodness I did! I had three loose diamonds! They saved my ring’s day.  Thank You!!!

For the past few years I have been itching to ditch my office (and all of the paperwork associated with it) but I just could not tear myself away from photographing weddings…being a wedding photographer looks like a carefree easy job, but I will tell you that there are a shocking number of hats. That is why I literally jumped up and down when I saw that Stacey was ready to expand her studio and grow a team that included adding an additional wedding photographer. I wrote her an email immediately that said “pick me!!”…and she did!!!!

My obsession = photographing weddings

The thorn in my side = office work

My dream = to only be a photographer

My dream come true = Stacey Kane Studio!!

Yesterday I spent a few hours photographing 3 models along side Earl Christie.  Shoot Style (if you are a photographer and don’t know who they are, you are totally missing out!) set up a boudoir photo shoot at a lakeside camp, which I jumped at the chance to join.  Fashion photography is new to me but I am head over heels in love with it…I have to say, boudoir photography had the exact same vibe.  Earl and I took turns setting up shots.  I loved the challenge of photographing these women.  Making beautiful photographs was the easy part…the challenge was in creating images that capture personality, sass, and a sense of strength…

This was the first video project that Evan (10) and I had worked on together.  I love his eye.  This hair cut was a big one for him.  He had been growing his hair out for years and was thinking he was ready for a shorter hair cut…in baby steps.  He had about 8″ cut off in the fall which left his hair at his shoulders.  A few months later he was ready to go shorter and I was ready to go to The L Factor! Evan was really nervous and almost changed his mind on the drive to the salon.  Once we arrived he was excited and let them choose what would look best…in the end he LOVED his haircut.  And I Loved mine!!

Yesterday, at The Harraseeket Inn, Real Maine Weddings announced the winning couple for the 2011 “Real Maine Wedding of the Year contest”!  Laura & Nolan!!!

I am so excited to be one of the vendors who will play a part in this fairytale wedding!!

To enter the contest, each couple had to submit a 2 minute video…here is the video Laura & Nolan submitted:

Four couples nervously waited for the contest winner to be announced.  Laura was standing alone because Nolan is currently in Afghanistan (expected to return in June or July).  Just as things were getting started Nolan’s niece ran up to give Laura a good luck hug and then would not leave Laura’s side…it was so sweet! It was such an emotionally charged moment.  Melanie Brooks, editor of Real Maine Weddings, read down a list of wedding vendors and some of the details which will be part of the October 21, 2011 wedding…then she announced that Laura & Nolan had won the $100K prize!!! The other three couples gave hugs and kind words of congratulations. Laura stepped up to the podium to give a huge thank you and several interviews with media. Something that came as a surprise to me, each of the other three finalists also received a prize…a honeymoon package!

I woke up this morning thinking about this wedding…from 2003!!!

Begin PART 1…
This wedding took place on a medium sized island (by Maine standards) off of the coast of Maine.  If you were a crow and you flew out to sea very very far, it seems to me that you could reach Isle au Haut at about the same time if you left from either Camden, Maine or Bass Harbor, MT. Dessert Island, Maine (AKA: Acadia National Park).

On my drive to Stonington, Maine to meet the ferry I made a quick stop to pick up the lovely flowers from florist Pam Polk. Flowers & Cameras in hand, under arm, and over my shoulder, I hopped onto the Ferry. The boat ride took a little less than an hour (I am like, 99% sure of that statement…but am 100% sure that is how my brain recalls this 8 year old memory!) The entire ferry ride was Gorgeous! Bald Eagles, the view of several fishing villages from the waters edge, sail boats, crashing waves…and on my return trip The Moon!

While looking for these photographs I found so many other weddings I have not yet shared… But first,
Adventures of Audra Photography vs. Isle au Haut Wedding: Part 1

:: Cadillac Mountain is part of Acadia National Park located on Mount Desert Island, Maine.  It is the highest summit in that area and so it offers 360° views.  Breath taking!  There is a clear view of the harbor and it overlooks much of Acadia National Park (when it is not socked in with fog).   You can climb or drive to the summit.   When you reach the top you will find exposed rock and stubby evergreen trees.   :: ~Audra

Cadillac Mountain is absolutely stunning!  A Maine Wedding Photographer’s Dream!

A few things to keep in mind when planning a ceremony on the mountain top:
It is windy.  We are talking blow the veil off your head kind of wind. Hold on to your Grandma! 
It is cold.  Even on a “hot” Maine day, the top of Cadillac is cool.  Yes, spitting snow in October. 
It is so beautiful! You will most likely be sharing the view with a small (sometimes large) crowd. 
We have fast moving fog. Getting married in a cloud can be romantic…just try not to get lost in it!

I LOVE weddings on Cadillac Mountain at sunset so don’t let these things stop you…just be ready for them. A basket of blankets, wear the fuzzy shrug you always dreamed about, take some photographs before you head up the mountain (unless you want all photos to have the windblown look), go the evening before to see where the sun will set and scout out three locations that you would enjoy (sometimes a bus load of sightseeing nuns can take your spot, really,..OK… a half true story {the full truth is below}), send a few friends up in advance to claim your spot, bring warm cider or hot chocolate, and my VERY BEST ADVICE: have a back up plan…some days you just wake up on the side of the bed that doesn’t feel like being blown about; it is nice to give yourself that freedom.

This next section is only for the daring, think outside the box types!

…It wasn’t really a bus of sightseeing nuns that took over the choice ceremony spot…but rather 4 happy nuns in a PT Cruiser cheering and shouting congratulations…but it could have happened… smile smile
